The marginal cost of producing energy in the Amazon and the Northeast is 53% higher than the national figure. This burden is due to the unavailability of machines taken out of service for maintenance or operating restrictions in both regions, according to an article published yesterday by Canal Energia, a specialized website.

The Electricity Trading Chamber says that the Price of Settlement of Differences, the PLD, remains at its maximum value, which is R$388.48 per megawatt hour for the period from January 24 to 30. However, it has risen by an additional 53% in the two poorest regions of the country because two average megawatts are out of operation, of which 1,300 MWmed from hydroelectric plants and 170 MWed from thermal plants. Unfortunately, it did not fully detail the location of these power generation shortages.

The CCEE explained to the website that the reduction in the availability of hydroelectric power stations is mainly due to the excess water pouring into the reservoirs of the Madeira River in Rondônia, which has hampered the productivity of its two plants. They are among the five largest in the country. He guarantees, however, that even with the drop in profitability, Santo Antônio and Jirau “continue to send the maximum amount of energy to the Southeast, within the limits of the transmission lines”.

It couldn’t be any other way, given the risk of blackouts due to high energy consumption in the Southeast, Midwest and South, as a result of the high temperatures in these regions. At peak times, there is a threat of demand outstripping energy supply, as happened on the 19th.

Even though it’s not in this situation, the Amazon is paying a higher price for being the country’s energy province. Most of the generation goes outside the region, where demand is higher.
